The Third Annual Pittsburgh Zine Fair will be held this year on Sunday, September 22, from 2pm to 8pm at The Union Project, accessibly located at 801 N Negley Avenue in Highland Park. This tabling expo will feature over 50 artists and writers, many of whom are from Pittsburgh, as well as zine archives from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and The Mr. Roboto Project. A zine reading-nook and a drop-in zine-making workshop will be hosted in the Atrium of The Union Project throughout the day. General admission for the entire event is free.

Zines, or self-published magazines often photocopied and distributed on a small-scale, were a popular form of expression for writers and artists before the advent of the Internet in the 1990’s. The catalyst for the first-ever Pittsburgh Zine Fair was the Feminist Zine Symposium held by the Carnegie Public Library in the spring of 2011. Soon after this event, a group of Pittsburgh writers and cartoonists organized a low-cost community event at Artists Image Resource in the North Side. In 2012, the Pittsburgh Zine Fair grew larger and was held at the Carnegie Mellon University campus in Oakland.

Join us this year at The Union Project, a beautifully restored church that now hosts dozens of community events and concerts each month. Celebrate the launch of the Third Annual Pittsburgh Zine Fair with a zine reading by Pittsburgh writers on Saturday, September 21 from 7-9pm at Assemble (5125 Penn Ave), hosted by the Literary Arts Boom.
